Moving Checklist

A month before you move:

  • Fill out a change of address form from your local post office.
  • Send change of address notices to friends, family, and important places like the IRS, Debtors, and magazine subscriptions.
  • Reserve your rental truck and/or contact moving company.
  • Make travel arrangements (airlines, car rental, hotel/corporate housing) if you are moving out of town.
  • Obtain your medical and dental records, x-rays and prescription histories.
  • Record the serial numbers of electronic equipment and take inventory of important items that may be lost, broken or stolen during your move.
  • Start using up perishable food items so there is less to pack.
  • Begin packing items like trinkets, clothes that are out of season, books, etc.

One to two weeks before you move:

  • Switch your utility services to your new address. Inform electronic, trash, water, newspaper, telephone and cable companies that you are moving.
  • Find friends or movers to help you on the big day. Confirm with them with enough advanced notice that you can find someone else to help if they can’t.
  • Clean your rugs and clothing and have them wrapped for moving.
  • Close bank accounts and have your funds put into your new bank account.
  • Collect valuables from your safe-deposit box. Make copies of important documents before you mail or take them to your new place.
  • Defrost refrigerator and freezer.
  • Start packing items that you will not need on a daily basis.
  • Figure out your travel route and schedule and send it to your family or a close friend.

The day of your move:

  • Check to make sure that all of the drawers, closets, storage areas, shelves, etc are empty.
  • Put all important documents, money and jewelry in a safe place, or use registered mail.
  • Carry credit cards and traveler’s checks for quick access to available funds.

When you arrive at your new home:

  • Change the address on your driver’s license.
  • Get new policies for insurance (auto, renter’s insurance, etc.)
Locate important places like hospitals, police stations, stores, etc. close to your new home.
